Personal Insights

What is a critical skill you’ve developed that wasn’t taught in school?

In 2020, I read a leadership book that as it turns out matched my path in leadership exactly. it is called Multipliers. It describes how there are 2 types of leaders diminishers who work tirelessly to take credit for all those around them which we’ve all met more than once in our careers versus their polar opposite.

The other are multipliers who work to build the confidence of their direct reports success which then translates to personal growth for those individuals as well as the immediate supervisors. I must admit I’ve had a 3/4 split of leaders who naturally gravitate to be diminishers. I know it sounds bad I appreciate them as they’ve shaped my career and my leadership path. I have spent my last decade as a leader ensuring that I am always a multiplier.

What life experience best prepared you for executive responsibility?

Odd as it may seem to some, parenthood is my answer. It forces you to set aside your feelings and consider how your decisions and actions affect those around you in the long term. What most would consider successful parenting requires negotiation skills, collaboration, financial acumen, communication, leadership and creativity.

How has your view of leadership changed over time?

I have observed and analyzed all my leaders while reading books like Multipliers by Liz Wiseman. This book and other leadership books and my own leaders have helped mold me into a very hands-on leader with daily proven technical acumen. I like to shape an organizations vision not only on paper, but physically working with my team to implement it.
